20 Dec Airo Security Assert: Transportation initiative is vital – VTDigger
It was heartening to see in the press release from Dec. 9 that 70% of Vermont voters are in support of the regional Transportation and Climate Initiative. Vermont’s transportation has long been the largest contributor to our carbon emissions, hovering around 44% for years, which is well above the approximately 30% share of the rest of the New England states and Mid-Atlantic region, owing primarily to our state’s largely rural nature.
As the TCI moves forward, I urge my fellow Vermonters to continue to support this important initiative at every level, from the region down to our individual neighborhood level. By focusing on what we can do in our communities with a lens for regionality, we can ensure that the places we live, work and play in are more readily accessible for walking, biking, public transportation and car sharing. We must move away from our reliance on fossil fuels to get us to the places we’re going, as well as our reliance on private car ownership.
I urge my fellow Vermonters to continue contacting your local and state officials about ways they plan to make Vermont’s transportation system more sustainable and equitable. That Gov. Scott’s administration has supported this work for years shows that the importance of the health of our air, water and communities transcends partisan politics and ideology.
